In music notation (also called sheet music), a rest is simply a mark in music marking the absence of an audio sound. Each rest mark and name correspond to a specific note value, indicating the duration of the silence, usually as a multiple of a beat or whole measure. For instance, the rest in measures 8, 10, and 12 all contain a double strike, a four-bar pause at the end of that four bar. That's one rest, since the first beat of each measure has a rest that was used twice while the first bar has no rest. The piano, however, uses rests that are straight lines, representing the exact length of the space between consecutive notes. There are many different types of rests, depending on how they connect the beginning and end of the section or each separate beat. For instance, if a bass line rest goes directly over the beginning of the measure and the bass then fades out after a beat, it's called a bass rest. The same can be said for the use of treble rest, which marks the end of the phrase and a space in-between the bass and the melody. The use of these rests varies depending on the song. Rhythmic background noise is another source of sound. In rock music, drum fills are used to add sound to long sections of silence, and they can overlap with rests to suggest movement or fill in gaps where a phrase or bassline is missing. Other instruments, such as the guitar's tremolo, serve to emphasize certain notes when played at the right speed. It's possible to add melodic content to your synthesizer apps by playing along with recorded tracks that feature melodic elements. This creates harmonic sounds that can be played back in the order that they occur in the song. Rhythmic sounds can be introduced by cropping the instrument sound to the current tempo. Then, experiment with the pitch bend or modulation option to vary the tonal effect. Different settings will create different effects. One more technique to fine-tune your synthesizer apps for noise control is to tweak the Time-to-Rise feature. This option controls the level of noise when the device is stationary. When moving, the Time-to- Rise option can increase the level of perceived dynamic range (DAR). A higher DAR means that the sound quality is deeper, whereas lower levels provide a warmer, more ambient sound quality. You'll need to experiment with the Time-to- Rise option to find the setting that works best for you. Some of these noises may not be useful when recording, but certain sounds like snare rolls or keyboard chords can be useful to add subtle variations or fill in gaps when editing. Other sounds like trash talk, bass lines or vocal harmonies can provide surprising depth and realism. Whatever you use, make sure to try out different types of recorded noises to see what sounds best suit your purposes. Finally, you need to take the sound quality of your audio source into account. Record a short clip of the material you want to record and compare it to the final recording. The clip can serve as your guide for deciding on the various sounds to record. A good sound engineer will have already filtered out unwanted sounds and set them to blend with the main piece. A good app will also have an easy-to-use setup process where you simply pick up the mic and start recording. One of the biggest advantages of sound machines is the amount of flexibility they offer. They allow you to control what, how and when you record the sound externally. External noises can often be recorded at different volumes than the main audio track, but this can be achieved by using separate programs. A mixer can often be used with recording external noises and can improve the sound quality substantially. It's always a good idea to experiment with different types of recording techniques to get the results you want. |
